I am typing on my brand new baby!! A shiny new iMac. It is soooo delicious! Sleek and streamlined. Pretty baby.....
This afternoon I got some exciting news. I can't share it just yet, so it will have to be a teaser for now. Sorry!! I don't want to jinx anything!
It's been a good week. On Tuesday evening I had a speaking enganement at the Anime Ball at York Woods Library. The Event was part of the Keep Toronto Reading Program, sponsored by the Toronto Public Library. My gig was to make an appearance and sign autographs as one of my many alter egos, Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon. That was actually one of my very first voice gigs, about 11 years ago! Anyhow, after the 'meet and greet', people took their seats in the theatre and I gave a short talk on voicing anime and the different methods used for dubbing and voice work in general. I then took some questions from the audience. (which ended up like it always does: "Can you sing the Tim Horton''s jingle again??") Of course!! After the Q & A, I introduced the film of the night, and anime feature titled "Ah My Goddess".
It was quite the experience. I can't believe how may people wanted my "Sailor Mars" autograph. When people asked me to sign something, I wasn't always sure if they wanted that autograph or the Emilie-Claire autograph. I had my CDs there for sale (just in case) and I actually sold a few, but here was the classic moment of the night. A lady came up to the table and picked up one of my albums.
Lady: This yours?
Me: Yes, these are all my albums right here! Feel free to take a look.
Lady: Hm. It should say what kind of music it is on here. What kind of music is it? It doesn't say on the CD. How am I supposed to know?
Me: Oh. Sorry about that. It's jazz.
Lady: *drops CD on table* I don't care for jazz. *turns and walks away*
Me: (what I wish I'd said) Oh Yeah? Well, I don't care for your attitude, lady!
Me: (what I actually said) *calling out* Ok bye! Nice to meet you!
There's gotta be one weirdo! Kill 'em with kindness.....
But the majority of people were such sweethearts. There was a little girl who was about 7 years old, who came armed with her Sailor Moon Soundtrack CD, which I could tell had been played approximately 7000 times. She was there with her parents, who were so nice!! She got an autograph and a picture and I could tell it just made her day, Mine too!
All in all, I was happy to be invited, and happy that something I was a part of so long ago is still alive and well in people's minds. I have to give props, kudos, shout outs and the like to my pal Katie Griffin, a very talented actress, who did the voice of Sailor Mars before I did. I took over for her when she was away shooting a film. It was, as I mentioned earlier, one of my first big voice gigs, and a pretty good education in terms of the 'dubbing experience'.
Aaaaaaannnnd....I just found out that I am nominated for a National jazz Award in the category Female Vocalist of the Year! An honour indeed! This is an award that is based on public voting, so go to the Online Voting Booth to cast your vote in ALL of the jazzy categories.
